A state of total abandonment has transformed the old Gairo into a touristic destination: its small, empty houses with wood or coloured lime main doors, its wrought iron balconies, the roads of the historic centre, the interiors of the houses painted in blue, everything there gives the atmosphere of a ghost village.
Amazing natural monument, Perda Liana is a typical Sardinian 'tacco', a calcareous tower dating back to the mesozoic period, which dominates the territory of Gairo; the cone-shaped base measures 1000 metres, while the huge monolith standing on it measures 120 metres. Once this area was teeming with woods, mainly with holm-oaks; nowadays, the landscape has been spoiled by various fires that have caused the disappearance of many animals, like the mouflon and the barbate gypaetus. Nevertheless, if you walk in the countryside, you can still sight wild-boars, partridges, hares, foxes and weasels.
